The Healing Sun

For most of human history the sun has been revered as a source of light, life and health. The ancient Egyptians worshipped the sun’s healing powers, as did the Greeks and Romans. In 1903, the Nobel Prize for Medicine was awarded to a sunlight therapist. Hospitals and sanatoria were built so patients with tuberculosis, rickets and war wounds could be exposed to the sun. Until about 50 years ago, health experts promoted sunbathing. Then medical thinking changed and the sun came to be seen as harmful.

In this presentation Richard Hobday explains how the sun was used as a medicine and discusses the latest findings on the health benefits of sunlight and how to use it for your well-being.

Dr Richard Hobday is a Research Fellow at the University of the West of England, Bristol. He has many years’ experience of solar design in buildings and is a leading authority on the history of sunlight therapy. He is author of The Light Revolution and The Healing Sun. www.thehealingsun.org
