mysterious tremendum

don conreaux

that old gong magic has you in its spell...

wednesday 31 may 7pm

However tonight turns out-and nobody knows how it will-one thing is certain: you will never go to another evening quite like it. Spontaneity is an essential element in the work of gongmaster Don Conreaux, so anything could happen, and possibly will.

"The secret of the gong is its tremendous potential for healing and rejuvenation," says Don. "Because the gong covers the full spectrum of sound, it vibrates all the cells and bones and organs, some more than others, depending upon the pitch of the gong. You feel an influx of energy coming from it in your body as well as hear it. This "musical touch" which actually turns the body into one big ear, creates a sense of ecstasy of well-being."

Don describes Mysterious Tremendum as "a collage of culture"-the bringing together of instruments from around the world that "give out living tones that are organic. With this type of music, nothing is ever the same. It answers some sort of primal DNA urge for the roots that go way beyond lifetimes."

Mysterious Tremendum is not beautiful in the same sense that violin music is beautiful, Don says, adding that it's more accurately a force of energy, "like a divine engine, affecting the body's meridians. By and large, after it's over, you just feel great," he says. "You feel like you've been healed by the spirit of nature. And the wonderful thing about it is that the instruments heal the player while the player is playing the instrument."

Whatever happens, it will be an evening to remember. It will begin with a talk, then a concert with gong and other tone-producing instruments. The evening will include special meditations, creating healing within the entire field of sound. Oh, and by the way, bring along your own tone-producing instruments-drum, rattle, flute, bells-and, as Don says, "become part the roar of the universe". Tonight Don will again be joined by singing bowl master Aidan McIntyre.

For the past 30 years, Don Conreaux has brought the mystical and entertaining sounds of the ancient bronze gong (tam tam), bells, bell bowls, shofar and the spiral sea horn (conch) to millions of listeners around the world. He has appeared many times on television and radio as performing artist. He is a genuine Gongmaster, as well as artistic director of The Mysterious Tremendum Consort and School of Sacred Sound. His workshop is on 3 June. http://www.holistic-resonance.com
