sufism: the path of spiritual freedom

sarida brown

a deep resonance with the spiritual aspirations of our time

wednesday 5 october 7pm

Awareness of Sufism is growing in the 21st century through its 'drunken' poets of love, like Rumi and Hafiz, and teachers of Unity, like Ibn 'Arabi.
Known as the path of the heart, it celebrates the unveiling of love in the search for the Beloved, while offering a profound psychological and spiritual wisdom for transmuting consciousness from personal to universal.

Inherent in the path of the heart is the ideal of spiritual freedom: only the awakened heart, and no other authority, can be the mirror of Truth. This ideal is expressed in phrases such as, 'God is found in the depth of the human heart', and 'God is human perfection; man is divine limitation'.

So the Sufi path has always taught respect for all religions while seeking to be free from attachment to a particular religion - in the words of Ibn 'Arabi, 'My heart has become capable of all forms'.

This talk will explore why, although Sufism is a path of inner realisation, which evolved in ancient times in the Middle East, it has a deep resonance with the spiritual aspirations of our time.

Sarida Brown has been nurtured in the Sufi path for 30 years, teaches and guides retreats for the Sufi Order, and is responsible for the Sufi Healing Order worldwide. Sarida is the founder editor of Caduceus Journal, a magazine which is about healing for people, community and planet, and how we make a reality of our human ideals and spiritual vision. www.caduceus.info and www.sufiorder.co.uk/healingorder.php
