meditation for an age of science

vivien gibson

the journey within in the 21st century

wednesday 3 may 7pm

Tonight we will examine meditation for an age in which science and scientific rationalism seem to dominate the world.

Over the last few hundred years science has transformed our lives, eradicating disease, bringing prosperity to billions and creating amazing technological developments. Man has conquered wildernesses and oceans of the world and ventured into space. In many ways the world has turned into the "global village" that was being foretold 40 years ago.

Science has brought many blessings - but it has serious downsides too.

We now have to manage power which has the potential to destroy all life on Earth. Many people feel disconnected from the roots and rhythm of life. The march of science has often been soulless and unfeeling, achieved at the expense of the spiritual and intuitive sides of life.

On the other hand, inwardly, we have the opportunity for greater access to higher thought and spiritual power than we have ever had before.

All of this has profound implications for what we may call 'meditation' - a word with many different meanings for different people. How does the world we now live in change the nature of meditation? How can we use our meditative powers as a force for good? What meditations are good for people living busy lives? Can we find inner peace? These and many other fascinating questions are the subject of tonight's talk.

Science seeks the truths of the material world; meditation seeks it within and without, in higher mind, as well as concrete 'reality'. They are both part of the same search for truth, and must work together.

Vivien is a highly experienced spiritual teacher and instructor in meditation. She has been a student and practitioner of the spiritual sciences for most of her adult life and was a close follower of the late Dr George King, from whom she learned the great principles of meditation and self-development. She is the Centre's Educational Co-ordinator.
