yoga and psychic awareness
serena roney-dougal
exploring consciousness
wednesday 19 october 7pm
Tonight Serena will conduct you on a fascinating journey into the human mind, using the ancient teachings of yoga as a guide.
The word yoga is much misunderstood today. In its full sense it embodies a complete philosophy of being, developed and tested over thousands of years by people who understood how to use to its fullest extent that greatest of all investigative tools, the human mind.
In the 1970's, a theoretical framework for parapsychology, known as the psi-conducive syndrome, was developed from Patanjali's Yoga Sutras. These yoga sutras are part of the tantric philosophical tradition, which considers Consciousness as the ultimate origin of the universe, our little minds being part of the whole.
Tantric philosophy recognises sixteen levels of consciousness and states that our purpose is to become aware at each of these, so that we realise the ultimate state of being, which is to be at one with the original Consciousness. At the psychic level we experience mind not limited by time, space and the senses, and start to become aware of our potential omniscience and omnipotence. The latter are considered by some people to be attributes of the divine; they are called the siddhis in yogic philosophy. Patanjali says that these develop automatically as we become aware at the deeper levels of consciousness, called Samadhi. The implications of this philosophy of our mind are fascinating and far-reaching.
Serena Roney-Dougal did a PhD thesis in Parapsychology at Surrey University. She is the author of Where Science and Magic Meet and The Faery Faith. She has spent over 30 years studying and experiencing scientific, magical and spiritual aspects of the psyche, and has lectured and held courses, seminars and workshops in America, Europe and India. For the past three years, she has been lecturing on Parapsychology at Bihar Yoga Bharati, India during the winter. At present, she is doing research into the relationship between meditation and psychic awareness with Tibetan Buddhists in India. www.psi-researchcentre.co.uk
